Here's Gary's description of the concert repertoire:

The centerpiece of the concert is "Dona Nobis Pacem", by Ralph Vaughan Williams.  This major 35-minute cantata is easily one of my five favorite works for chorus and orchestra, and I am utterly thrilled that we are doing it.  We will present the composer's version with strings and piano, to which we will add brass quintet.  The work will feature soprano Jennifer Krikawa and baritone Andrew Krikawa.  Vaughan Williams composed it as Europe was preparing for the not-quite-yet-inevitable Second World War, choosing texts from the Bible, the Mass, three poems by Walt Whitman, and the famous "Angel of Death" speech by John Bright.  More information about the work is available here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dona_nobis_pacem_(Vaughan_Williams)

The second half of the concert will consist of the following works:
-- The traditional "Dona Nobis Pacem" round.  We will perform this while walking into the hall -- exciting!
-- Two sing-along Christmas carols as arranged by Sir David Willcocks. Many of you will recall that we performed excerpts from this cycle two years ago.
-- Two excerpts from "Eight Days of Chanukah" by Abraham Kaplan, who was my conducting professor at the University of Washington.  He was also Leonard Bernstein's go-to choral guru in New York in the 1950s and '60s, and while head of the choral program at Juilliard he worked with most of the great luminaries of that golden era.  Since retiring in 2004, he has devoted himself to composition more fully.  He completed this cycle earlier this year; the publishers haven't even got it out to print yet, it's just that new.
-- "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl.  This is one of the great choral standards of the twentieth century, and a piece that many of you have requested we perform.  Well, here ya go!  This calls for soprano, alto and tenor soloists, who will be selected by audition.
-- We will close with "Peace, Peace", a gentle tune that counterpoints an audience sing-along of "Silent Night".

After June 1, Jo Ann will send out more details about the 9/11 Mozart Rolling Requiem. Dust off your Barenreiter scores though!  And, MIDI files are available for off-line study -- click the Play It link (left).

Also after June 1, Jo Ann will send out more details about the Sept./Dec. session. Rehearsals for the Dec. 3 & 4 concerts will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The agenda for the August  board meeting, and minutes of past meetings, are available here.

Member expectations and Attendance Policy:

Attendance

Members should make every attempt to be on time to rehearsals and concert calls. On average, it seems that every member misses two rehearsals during the session. If it is unavoidable that you must miss more, communicate that to your section leader. People missing any of the last three rehearsals pre-concert should discuss that fact with the Artistic Director. Most rehearsals are at the Vashon High School band room. Concerts are performed at Bethel Church.

Commitment

Members must work on learning their part by getting information from the section leader if absent, attending any scheduled sectional rehearsals, listening to the practice CD (if provided) and/or using the available midi files on the website or www.songlearning.com.

Responsibility

Members must stay current with email messages and the information posted at www.vashonislandchorale.org.

Members should know the dates of all rehearsals and concerts. Members should communicate with their section leaders who serve as liaisons to the board members and Artistic Director. Members should promote concert ticket sales!

Other opportunities:
